A migraine is not just a headache. It manifests with different symptoms and different treatment approaches compared to a regular headache. Attacks can include symptoms such as severe throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation which usually occurs on one side of the head, oftentimes accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and acute sensitivity to light. A migraine can last for several hours or several days, and can occur periodically or multiple times per week.
We know that migraines have been plaguing people since the beginning of recorded time. Unfortunately, there have not been any major breakthroughs in treatment options. However, we have come a long way in the quest for a cure. Centuries ago, treatments included bloodletting, inserting garlic into an incision made into the temple, handling electric eels, and other brutal and downright odd remedies. Luckily for us, there are more palatable options that can reduce migraine frequency and severity, or stop a mild headache from progressing into a full-blown migraine.
If you have seen a doctor and been diagnosed with migraines, it is important to understand the treatment options available. These can usually be bucketed in to two categories: preventative and acute.
Preventative: These are designed to reduce migraine frequency and severity. The treatments include pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic solutions. Some examples of these are as follows:
Botox: Blocks neurotransmitters and reduces frequency of migraines
CGRP Antagonist: Blocks the action of CGRP which is thought to produce pain
Ketamine: Anesthetic that may act as a neuromodulator
Neurostimluation Devices: Delivers electrical stimulation to the brain
Acute: These are treatments that are taken when you are experiencing a migraine and include over-the-counter pain relievers, prescription medications, or treatment devices. The most commonly used medications are Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen, and Opioids.
To date, scientists continue to understand migraine causation and treatment options. With new studies that show just how debilitating migraines can be, funding campaigns are underway to help these research efforts get us closer to a cure.
